WHAT TYPE OF EVALUATION IS RIGHT FOR ME?
There are many types of evaluations. The appropriate type of evaluation can generally be determined by looking at the purpose for seeking evaluation. Below, I describe two common types of evaluations that people seek.
A psychological evaluation is appropriate for individuals who seek to identify a possible mental health condition. For example, a psychological evaluation could be used to provide diagnostic clarification or to identify a previously undiagnosed mental health condition. Some examples of conditions that can be evaluated using a psychological evaluation are mood disorders, personality disorders, psychotic disorders, etc. A basic psychological evaluation would include a clinical interview and might include psychological testing, such as a personality test or an intelligence test. The result of this type of evaluation will be a psychological evaluation report that summarizes the data obtained from the evaluation. If present, the report will include any diagnoses and treatment recommendations resultant from the evaluation.
A neuropsychological evaluation is appropriate for individuals who seek to identify their strengths and weaknesses in a variety of areas. Areas commonly examined with a neuropsychological evaluation include intelligence, memory, language, attention, and academic achievement. Some examples of conditions that can be evaluated using a neuropsychological evaluation are memory loss, poor school performance, attention deficit, autism, etc. A neuropsychological evaluation would include a clinical interview and administration of several tests to examine the different areas of functioning. The result of this type of evaluation will be a neuropsychological evaluation report that summarizes the data obtained from the evaluation. If present, the report will include any diagnoses and treatment recommendations resultant from the evaluation. An optional feedback session is included for me to review the findings with you and answer your questions.
